What to Snack On During Thanksgiving Football

In my house the Thanksgiving games are on from noon until the turkey is carved, and I’m not sitting through 3 of them on an empty stomach. I keep the snacks coming in waves so nobody fills up too early. Wings, sliders, and dips hold the line until dinner. Everyone gets a plate.

1) Chili Cheese Dip

Cream cheese on the bottom, chili in the middle, cheddar on top. It’s 3 layers and about 5 minutes of work. The chili and cheese give it real staying power between games. Keep it warm in a small slow cooker.

2) Queso Blanco Dip

Restaurant-style white queso is easier at home than you’d think. White American cheese melts smooth with a little milk and green chiles. Stir in browned chorizo if you want it heartier. It disappears every time I make it.

    3) Smash Burger Sliders

Thin, crispy-edged beef patties smashed on a hot griddle, then stacked with cheese and pickles on slider buns. They’re the snack that turns into everyone’s lunch. A pound of beef makes about 8 sliders. Make them right before kickoff so they’re hot.

    4) BBQ Chicken Flatbread

Shredded chicken, barbecue sauce, red onion, and mozzarella on a store-bought flatbread. It bakes in about 10 minutes and slices into easy squares. The chicken makes it more filling than plain pizza. Top with cilantro after baking.

      5) Buffalo Wings

No game day spread is complete without wings. I bake them on a rack at high heat until the skin is crispy, then toss in buffalo sauce. Serve with celery and a blue cheese dip made with Greek yogurt. Plan on about 6 wings per person.

      6) Bacon Cheese Fries

Crispy fries under melted cheddar and crumbled bacon. It’s a game day classic for a reason. I bake the fries on a sheet pan so I can make a big batch at once. A side of ranch made with Greek yogurt adds a little protein.

      7) Carne Asada Fries

Fries loaded with grilled carne asada, cheese, guacamole, and pico. It’s basically a meal on a tray. Skirt steak cooks in minutes on a hot pan. Set out forks because this one gets messy.

      8) Spicy Guacamole

Ripe avocados, jalapeƱo, lime, and plenty of salt. I leave a little texture so it doesn’t turn into baby food. Make it right before guests arrive and press plastic wrap onto the surface so it stays green. Serve with chips and cut vegetables.

      9) Pigs in a Blanket

Mini sausages wrapped in crescent dough are a guaranteed hit. They bake in about 15 minutes. I brush them with egg wash and sprinkle everything bagel seasoning on top. Set out mustard for dipping.

      10) Cowboy Caviar

Black beans, black-eyed peas, corn, peppers, and a tangy dressing. It’s a dip and a salad at the same time. The beans give it plenty of plant protein and fiber. It holds up for hours on the counter.

        11) Homemade Tortilla Chips

Cut corn tortillas into wedges, brush them with oil, and bake until crisp. They’re sturdier than bagged chips and hold up to heavy dips. Salt them the second they come out of the oven. Make a double batch because they go fast.

        12) Mango Pico de Gallo

Classic pico with diced mango folded in for a sweet and spicy twist. It brightens up a table full of heavy, cheesy snacks. Spoon it over the carne asada fries or eat it straight with chips. Make it an hour ahead so the flavors come together.

        13) 7-Layer Dip

Refried beans, Greek yogurt, guacamole, salsa, cheese, olives, and green onions layered in a dish. Every scoop gets a little of everything. It’s a great make-ahead option. Serve with sturdy chips.

        14) Pizza Pockets

Bread, sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni pressed in a pie iron until crispy. Kids love making their own. Use turkey pepperoni and part-skim mozzarella to lighten them up. Cut them in half so they’re easier to share.

        15) Black and Gold Snack Board

Pick your team colors and build a board around them. Black olives, blackberries, cheddar cubes, pretzels, and yellow peppers make a black and gold spread. Add salami and cheese for protein. It’s an easy way to make the table look festive.

        16) BBQ Chicken Drumsticks

Drumsticks are cheap, easy to eat with your hands, and packed with protein. Bake or grill them, then brush with barbecue sauce at the end. They’re a little less messy than wings. Make a big platter because they go fast.

          17) Loaded Nachos

A sheet pan of chips loaded with seasoned beef, beans, cheese, and jalapeƱos. Bake until the cheese melts, then top with pico and sour cream. Layer the toppings so every chip gets some. It’s the most popular thing on my table every year.

          18) Baby Back Ribs

Low and slow ribs are worth the effort on a long game day. Rub them the night before, then cook them for about 3 hours. Slice them into individual bones so they’re easy to grab. Serve with extra sauce on the side.

          19) Pulled Pork Slider Bar

Set out a tray of pulled pork with slider buns, slaw, pickles, and sauce. Everyone builds their own. Pork shoulder is cheap and feeds a crowd. Make the pork the day before and reheat it in the slow cooker.

          20) Football Fruit Tray

A watermelon carved into a football is a fun centerpiece for the table. Fill the area around it with grapes, berries, and pineapple. It gives people something fresh between all the fried food. A Greek yogurt dip on the side adds a little protein.

          21) Turkey Cranberry Sliders

A Thanksgiving twist on sliders with sliced turkey, cranberry sauce, and Swiss on Hawaiian rolls. Brush the tops with butter and bake until the cheese melts. They’re a great way to use leftover turkey on Friday. Make a tray for the late game.
